Chapter 8: With You Under the Mistletoe
Holidays Special

Jason Chen cover “Mistletoe”

~*~*~*~*~*

“Why is Principal Vargas forcing us to stay here until today? I don’t want to be here…” Mei groaned, stretched out on the sofa as she laid a hand on her forehead dramatically.

“Will you stop that?” (Name) muttered from her spot on the recliner. “He said we could leave immediately after our last final. You can choose to stay until today to participate in whatever he has planned.” Mei groaned again. “You should be blaming Yong Soo, since he’s the one that’s forcing you and your other siblings and cousins stay here.”

“I already didddd~ Ugh, I’ll never understand why he wants to do the stupid activity the Principal has planned.”

(Name) rolled her eyes and continued reading her book. Her finals ended three days ago, but Old Man Vargas had insisted that every student stay a bit longer because he had this weird ‘holiday game’ he wanted to play. Most of the students relented. But… Now that (Name) thought about it, it was mainly the freshmen who stayed. Not too many upperclassmen stayed behind, seemingly frantic in trying to get out in time… How peculiar.

Suddenly her phone buzzed. Picking it up, (Name) read the text from Feli. She sighed and pocketed the phone again, standing up slowly.

“Come on, Feli says the game is ready.” Another groan from the Taiwanese girl was heard. “Ugh, be quiet already.”

~*~*~*~*~*

The pair made their way to the main building of the university as the cold December wind blew past them. Once they’d made it in, they saw Feli waving at them from the auditorium doors.

“Over here!” He called, a happy smile on his face. “We’re still waiting for a few dozen more students, so just spend some time relaxing in the auditorium!”

(Name) and Mei nodded, thanking him before walking inside. They had a bit of a dispute over where to sit down before (Name) finally relented and the pair went over to sit near the stage.

“Hey dudettes,” Alfred said as he made his way over to them. “Glad to see you guys decided to stay and play this game!”

“Trust me, I’m not staying here by choice,” Mei muttered.

Alfred laughed at her response as (Name) rolled her eyes. “Do you know what the principal has in store for us?” She asked, turning to the American. Yet he simply shook his head and shrugged.

“No one knows, not even the Italian bros. I guess it’ll have to wait until everyone arrives.”

It took awhile, but after half an hour, most of the students that said they were coming had arrived. The sound of a microphone being tapped on quieted the massive group as all heads turned towards the speaker.

Principal Vargas smiled. “Welcome, brave students of World Academy W! As you may know, I’m—”

“Why’d he call us ‘brave’?” (Name) muttered under her breath to Bella.

“He probably has something evil planned,” she responded, shaking her head.

“—And the rules of the game, which I call ‘capture the chocolate,’ is to gather as many chocolates that I’ve laid around the building. Violence is not permitted! There are cameras and professors situated around to supervise this rule. Stealing the chocolate, and only the chocolate, is allowed, as long as no one is hurt. Whoever has the most at the end of the game wins a very special prize! You will have exactly one hour to gather every chocolate possible. An announcement will be made when time is up. Stay safe, kids. The game will begin in five minutes!”

The students were murmuring once the principal had stopped speaking, feeling unsure about all of this. Yet some seemed excited, particularly the ones that were competitive. (Name) looked over wearily at Eliza who seemed to have the flame of determination lighting up her eyes.”

“Oh, and I nearly forgot.” Principal Vargas began again. “Most of the time, there is going to be a mistletoe situated on the ceiling directly on top of the chocolate. And you all know what happens when you step under a mistletoe with another person?” He had a sly smile on his face. “Watch out for them, students. Not all the places with mistletoes hide a chocolate. And if you refuse to kiss, you will be tied together by the wrist with the other person for the remainder of the time that is left. Don’t try to pull a fast one though; remember, there will be professors and cameras watching.”

“What’s the prize?” Gilbert called out.

“I’ve been wondering if anyone was going to ask,” the Italian chuckled. “Good question, Gilbert. I can’t reveal the prize yet, but here is the box it’s in.” He stepped aside to reveal a rather large box sitting on top of a table. It was all wrapped up with a nice large bow on top. (Name) wondered how nobody saw that before.

There were audible gasps and immediately more students became excited.

“Three minutes left before the competition begins!” The vice principal Folkert called out, examining the students as if to deduce who would be most likely to win.

A few professors walked around, handing out pieces of paper that stated which rooms had hidden chocolates.

“Isn’t this exciting?!” Eliza suddenly stated, the fire never dying from her eyes. “I’m going to fight off anyone who dares cross my path! That prize is mine.”

Vash, however, looked anything but excited. His narrowed teal colored eyes were scanning the crowds. “I don’t like this.” He responded. “Forcing students to either kiss or link up just to get a prize? Lili, I’ll stay by your side so that none of the perverts get to you.”

Lili sweatdropped but nodded her head anyway. “Okay, bruder.”

(Name) laughed lightly at his over protectiveness. Turning to glance at Bella, she asked, “What’re you doing?”

“I’m texting Tim. He didn’t want to come because he thought it was going to be a waste of time. But now that there’s a free prize, he’ll definitely participate.” The Belgian girl replied, smirking slightly.

“The contest begins now!”

The sudden announcement seemed to catch the students off guard. Yet a sudden eruption of screaming college students happened, determined to win whatever was in the large box.

(Name) practically had to leap out of the way as people barged past her. “W-wait! Let me get out first!” She glanced around frantically and just caught sight of Alfred and Matthias leaping over seats to get out of the rows. “What the hell, this isn’t the Olympics!” Yet the image of the box came back to mind. “Screw it, let’s do this!

She placed her hands on the seats in the row in front of her and quickly heaved herself over. Jumping over the seats, she finally got out of the rows and glanced around. Spotting a small, but noticeable chocolate ball peeking out from the stage curtains. (Name) suddenly broke out into a sprint and threw herself onto the stage, wincing at the pain but getting up quickly.

Seeing another student running towards the chocolate as well, (Name) narrowed her eyes and dived towards the chocolate, snatching it just in time and rolling away so that they weren’t both under the mistletoe. She lifted herself off the floor then, quickly wiping away some dust before grabbing the paper from her pocket. There was a chocolate in a room not far from here…

(Name) looked around. The paper said there were ten chocolates in the auditorium, but the chaos that ensued would make it difficult to retrieve them all. She pocketed the paper and tried to sneak as discreetly as possible towards the exit.

Once doing so, she broke out into a run and found the class, skidding slightly passed it before grabbing the door and throwing it open.

“Stop right there!” (Name) yelled out, pointing at Emil who had a hand outstretched towards a chocolate situated on a desk.

“(Name).” He simply stated, nodding at her. She narrowed her (e/c) eyes and stepped inside. The Icelander made no move to grab it, despite being in perfect distance to quickly swipe it away.

She felt suspicion rise up at his unmoving state. What was he planning? Yet she quickly dismissed the thoughts and now stood nearly directly in front of him.

Emil narrowed his own violet eyes, staring at her warily. Then, his eyes widened and a blush emerged from his face. He looked off to the side for a few moments before glancing back at her.

(Name) furrowed her eyebrows. “Wha—” She was cut off as Emil clumsily smashed his lips against her own. Her (e/c) eyes widened and before she could react, the Icelander pulled away.

“Mistletoe…” He muttered. He glanced back at her, observing her frozen state, then grabbing the chocolate and sprinting out of the room.

The (h/c) haired girl took a few moments to recover from the shock and looked up towards the ceiling. She cursed under her breath. Principal Vargas had stated that most of the time, there would be the familiar plant hanging above the chocolate. There was no mistletoe.

~*~*~*~*~*

(Name) sprinted faster through the hallways. The majority of the students had moved out of the auditorium and were now starting to spread throughout the building. She’d only been able to collect five chocolates so far, and based on the paper, there were 150 around the building.

‘How long has it been already?’ She thought.

“Attention students, the first ten minutes has passed!” The intercom startled her before she quickly recognized that it was the principal’s voice. “I hope you all have found at least one chocolate! And perhaps gotten closer with one of your classmates! Ahahahah—” The sound of someone getting slapped over the intercom could be heard before it was turned off.

(Name) grimaced. That principal… He loved seeing them do stupid things, doesn’t he? She nearly had other incidents with other students, some she knew and some she didn’t. So far, however, she’d only had to kiss Emil.

‘Art room!’

Seeing the classroom just a few feet away, (Name) nearly leaped towards it in excitement. Opening the door, she saw with frustration that three students were already there, searching the desks.

“Where are they?!” One student asked in anger. “There are supposed to be five in here!”

(Name) scanned the room carefully and saw the familiar chocolate ball situated on top of the whiteboard. Smirking slightly, she made her way slowly over, feigning the act of searching for the chocolate. The students spared her a glance before continuing their own search.

As she trailed her fingers over the professor’s desk, (Name) noticed a chocolate hidden in the post-it holder. She paused for a moment before quickly wrapping her fingers around it. The sound of the wrapper beneath her fingers alerted the other students and she quickly turned towards the entrance, but not before leaping up and grabbing the hidden candy from the whiteboard. Then, (Name) sprinted out before anyone could catch her.

“See ya, bastards!” She said, laughing as she heard them cursing out loud. “All right, the next art room has three!”

She opened the door upon arrival and saw a boy she didn’t recognize searching around. He turned around to see who had entered and (Name) was taken aback by his bright emerald green eyes. The first thought that came to mind was ‘Arthur.’ Yet it was obvious it wasn’t him. This man had fiery messy red hair instead of blond. The sunlight that poured from the windows laid on him, making the man look almost angelic like.

His stare was unnerving yet he didn’t say anything. Feeling awkward, (Name) briefly wondered if she should just come back later. But the determination of winning the prize came back, and she wordlessly walked into the room.

As (Name) weaved around the desks in search of the chocolates, she could still feel his piercing stare on her back.

“What’s your name, lass?”

The sudden question caught her by surprise as she looked up. Words seemed to fail her for a moment before she uttered out, “(Name).”

The red haired man nodded. “So you’re the girl people have been talking about. Pleasure to meet you. My name’s Alistair. Arthur’s older brother.”

(Name) gave a polite smile. “I knew it. You guys do share a few distinct qualities… You’re a second year student, right?”

Alistair grunted. “Yeah, only two more years until I can graduate.”

“Well I still have three, so to me you’re considered lucky.”

He chuckled at that. “I suppose.”

Silence followed afterwards as they continued searching. As the minutes passed by, it was obvious the pair was becoming more and more frustrated.

“Aren’t there supposed to be three?” (Name) asked, annoyance laced in her voice.

“That’s what the list says.”

The (h/c) haired girl walked back towards the front of the class and began searching the desk next to the window. Sticking a hand inside the cubby hole, she smiled in satisfaction. Exactly three.

She grabbed the chocolates and pulled her hand out, turning around to announce to Alistair that she’d emerged victorious. But the sight of him standing directly behind her startled her.

“You found them!” He remarked.

(Name) smiled. “Yes I did~ Better luck next time, Alistair.” She let out a laugh when she saw him point a finger upwards. Her laugh died down in her throat and her smile morphed to one of despair at the sight of a mistletoe hanging above them.

“I have better luck now,” The Scotsman stated, smirking down at her.

“W-wait, I got the chocolates before you came up to me! It doesn’t count!” (Name) tried to protest, a blush growing on her face.

“The rules are the rules, unless you want to be tied up with me?”

She opened her mouth to speak, but then contemplated her options. Suddenly, Alistair gently grabbed the sides of her head and placed a deep kiss on her lips. His tongue easily slipped past her lips and into her mouth as (Name)’s first instinct was to push him away. Yet, her hands were shaky as they pressed against his chest. Her back was against the table as Alistair deepened the kiss, forcing her to bend slightly over more.

It took all of her strength to not moan against his lips. Just as her eyes fluttered closed, Alistair pulled away. He gazed into her eyes for a moment before chuckling, to which she could feel in his chest.

“Good luck with the rest of the competition, (Name).” He stated simply, a smirk on his lips. Alistair then walked out of the classroom, leaving her to herself. She was vaguely aware of the fact that the three chocolates were missing.

~*~*~*~*~*

(Name) wandered the hallways, looking for the next classroom. There was only half an hour left and she had ten, having found two more from other classrooms and stealing one chocolate from a student when he wasn’t looking. She would have had thirteen by now if it weren’t for the smirking Scotsman who apparently liked to invade other people’s personal bubble.

“Stupid head…” She muttered under her breath as she looked around. “Oh, here it is.”

The science rooms were even trickier to find the chocolates. The lab tables had multiple drawers and the cabinets around the room would take up too much time.

Opening the door, (Name) saw Lukas leaning besides one of the lab tables, looking at his phone. Upon hearing the door opening, his dull blue eyes glanced up.

“I didn’t know you would actually participate in this crazy game,” (Name) remarked, laughing slightly.

“The idiot Dane wanted us five to ‘bond.’ But the moment the game began, he started leaping over the seats.” Lukas answered, glancing back down at his phone in disinterest.

“I know, I saw that.” She laughed again as she recalled Matthias’ eager face as he jumped over the seats as if they were hurdles. “How many chocolates did you find so far?”

“Fifteen.”

“W-what?! How?!” (Name) stared at him with her mouth agape in complete disbelief.

A faint smirk made its way to the Norwegian man’s face. “No one said we couldn’t use magic to help us win.” She narrowed her eyes at that. “Plus, the chocolates really aren’t that difficult to find.” He added.

“Huh, all right then,” (Name) huffed, looking around the room. “I suppose you found all three of them in this room already?”

He held up his right hand, revealing two chocolate spheres between his index and middle finger. “I can’t find the last one. Kind of got bored searching also.”

The (nationality) girl began searching as she teased. “What, you aren’t going to use your magic to find it?”

“It’s not worth using it for this anymore.”

She giggled at his response and continued searching. After what felt like an eternity, (Name) made her way around the lab table towards Lukas.

“I’ve been searching around the room for what feels like forever. You have the three chocolates, don’t you?” She questioned, staring at him intently.

At first, Lukas stayed silent, scrolling through his phone. Then, he held up his right hand again and revealed all three.

Nobody moved as the Norwegian still would not look up at her and (Name) staring at his face. Suddenly, she took a step forward and swiped her hand at his own to steal the chocolates. Yet Lukas reacted quickly and simply moved his hand backwards.

He finally looked up and pocketed his phone. They were only inches apart now. The (h/c) haired girl stared at the chocolates before switching over to look at his eyes.

A few moments of silence passed before Lukas rolled his dark blue eyes and placed the chocolates in her palm.

“What are you doing?” She asked, confusion clearly evident on her face.

“I don’t need them. I barely even want to play this game, but I can’t leave the building without forfeiting.” He replied simply.

(Name) tilted her head to the side slightly before nodding and giving him a happy smile. “Well okay. Thanks!” Just as she was about to step away from him, he spoke up again.

“(Name).”

“Yeah?”

“Mistletoe.”

Her eye twitched as she slowly looked up. “You’ve got to be kidding me. Why—” Yet her voice died in her throat as Lukas leaned forward, hovering his lips by mere millimeters away from her own. (Name) felt her breathing hitch as her heart pounded quickly in her chest.

A few moments of nearly unbearable silence passed before Lukas moved his head away from her lips and towards her cheek. His hands found their way around her waist as he placed a light chaste kiss against her cheek. (Name) could feel her face light up in a bright blush.

“Watch out for your stuff, (Name). You never know who’s going to take it.” Lukas murmured quietly, his lips brushing against her cheek. Standing up straight again, he walked away and out of the classroom.

It took awhile, but (Name) finally regained mobility and took in a shaky breath. Even a teasing kiss like that managed to leave her this flustered. She placed her hands to cover her eyes for a moment before removing them. Then, her right hand felt its way to the pouch that was tied to her waist. She fingered through the chocolates that laid inside and snorted lightly. She was missing five chocolates.

“That sneaky bastard…”

~*~*~*~*~*

(Name) made her way back to the auditorium, intent on finding more of the chocolate spheres. There were fifteen minutes remaining, and she was only able to find two more to replace the ones Lukas had stolen from her.

Yet as she opened the door, (Name) immediately regretted it. The auditorium was still in chaos as students fought over the chocolates. “Aren't there supposed to be professors supervising us…?” She muttered under her breath. Looking to her left, she jumped away in time to avoid two students rolling on the ground fighting over two chocolates.

The sound of battle cries then directed her attention towards the stage as Arthur and Francis faced off.

“If you think I'd come even nearer, you're dead wrong,” Arthur spat, glaring at the Frenchman.

“That’s perfectly fine with me, black sheep. I’ll just take these two chocolates then.” Francis retorted.

“Don't you dare.”

They seemed to move in sync as they stepped off to the side, away from the chocolate and mistletoe.

“Come at me, ‘Iggy.’” That seemed to do it as from even (Name)’s spot, she could see the Englishman’s face turn bright red with anger. Letting out an angry screech, Arthur leaped at his rival, Francis meeting him halfway as they collapsed onto the ground, letting out angry screeches as they rolled around, throwing punches at each other.

(Name) stared at them, mouth agape slightly and face twisted in an ‘are you serious’ face. She made her way carefully towards the stage and heaved herself up onto it. She spared them a glance before quickly going over to where the chocolates were and snatched them up, placing them into her pouch before sneaking away.

“Are there anymore here?” She questioned to herself as she glanced around, away from the stage and the pair of angry blond men fighting. “Ah-ha!” (Name) spotted a chocolate situated in a nearby cupholder in one of the chairs

“Stop right there!”

(Name) frowned and turned around to face whoever was trying to stop her. “I don't appreciate the interference, Lovi.”

The Italian rolled his eyes. “Yeah, yeah ragazza. I saw that chocolate first, so it's mine!”

“Sorry, but you weren't quick enough.” She shrugged, stepping closer to it. He narrowed his eyes and stepped forward as well. (Name) frowned again. How was she going to distract him in order to get the chocolate? With the rows of seats, escape was difficult. An idea popped into her mind as she let out a sly smile and stepped closer again to the candy. Lovino seemed frustrated with this game by now and walked forward until he was only a foot away.

Giving him a sweet smile, (Name) then asked in a gentle tone. “Lovi? Can you help me with something?”

The Italian furrowed his eyebrows in confusion before rolling his eyes. “What?”

She suddenly reached forward and pulled his head closer to his before placing a deep kiss on his lips. There wasn’t a mistletoe above them, but Lovino wasn't aware of that. His hazel eyes widened before his hands found their way around her waist. It took a lot of self control to not smirk against his lips. Lovino was so into the kiss that he hadn't even noticed that (Name) reached into his pouch and transferred a few chocolates into her own pouch. After a few more moments, they pulled away.

“Thanks for the help, Lovino.” She giggled. “You can have the chocolate.”

He smirked. “Nah, it's okay. You take it. Your kiss was sweet enough.”

(Name) smiled. “Aww, how sweet Lovi. Thank!” She quickly grabbed the chocolate and ran off. Before she exited the auditorium, she heard him curse out.

“What the fuck?! I'm missing six chocolates!”

~*~*~*~*~*

All of the students were gathered in the auditorium again. Some appeared to be angry while others looked triumphant.

“All right, students! The competition is now officially over! I hope you all had fun!” Principal Vargas announced, looking as happy as ever.

“Who’s the winner?!” Someone demanded from the crowd.

The principal chuckled. “After recording all of the chocolates every student has, I can announce that the winner is… Everyone!”

Silence followed his revelation.

“...So does that mean we all get prizes?” Tino questioned, looking as confused as the rest of his peers.

“No, no. The whole point of the competition was just to have fun! To get into the holiday spirit and spend time with each other.” He walked over to the large box and shook it, to which no sound emitted from it. “There was no prize to begin with!”

.
.
.

“…Are you fucking kidding me?!”

Principal Vargas shook his head. “Now, now Lovino, no need to get—”

“I nearly died trying to get those stupid chocolates!” A voice piped up from the back.

“Do you not understand how much shit just went down this past hour for a non existent prize?!”

“Told you they’d be angry,” Folkert muttered to Romulus.

Dozens of angry glares caused the Italian to shrink back. “N-now calm down! You all get to keep the chocolates! They’re very expensive and tastes really good!”

Tim broke out from the crowd and walked towards the stage. “Never do this again,” he hissed out, looking extremely angry and annoyed.

Romulus nodded and cowered behind Folkert who only let out an exasperated sigh. A series of angry mutters were heard as the students began to file out of the building, fully intent on leaving for their winter break now.

I would have played just for the chocolate, maybe even voluntarily kissed a lot of people and steal all their chocolate when they were distracted.
